Enjoy Halloween While Celebrating National Orthodontic Health Month

Trick or a treat?

Are you ready to eat all those chocolate bars, candy canes, and marshmallows? Halloween is coming up, and we know kids are anxiously waiting to get their hands on that candy. But wait, did you know that October is also National Orthodontic Health Month?

As orthodontic specialists, we care about your smile and want it to be healthy and bright. So, we are dedicating this month to helping you learn more about orthodontic treatment and how to care for your teeth.

We know that it’s very difficult for children to resist chocolate, especially around Halloween season. It becomes even more difficult when your children are wearing braces, as soft and gooey candy like marshmallow can get stuck in their brackets. Hard candies and sticky candies are totally off-limits, they can brake the brackets so children should avoid this type of candy.

As a parent, you must be concerned about your child’s oral health. Misaligned teeth can occur as teeth develop. That’s why age 7 is an ideal time to get an orthodontic evaluation with your local orthodontist, Dr. Maria Yazji. Some children have bad habits such as thumb sucking and breathing constantly through the mouth that can lead to severe orthodontic issues. Dr. Yazji can do a comprehensive evaluation and recommend an early treatment if your child needs it. Delaying an orthodontic consultation can result in extended treatment times.

So, if your child needs orthodontic treatment or your dentist recommended visiting an orthodontist for a complete evaluation for braces to give them the smile they deserve, visit Dr. Maria Yazji in Weston, downtown Brickell, or West Miami and learn about orthodontic treatment options for you or your family.

Are you already wearing braces? If you’re already embarked on the journey to a smile you’ll love and you don’t want to mess with your brackets and wires, follow the tips below by Dr. Maria Yazji to protect your orthodontic appliances during this fun-filled month.

  1. Don’t eat hard or sticky Halloween candies

It’s really hard to avoid fudge, gummies, taffy, caramel, pretzels, and jelly beans during the treat-filled month of Halloween. But if you want to get good results with your braces, avoid these treats while in treatment. Just try a little harder and avoid sugary candy.

  1. Stay away from nuts and cashews

Some chocolates usually contain nuts and cashews. Please try not to eat such candies, chips, and popcorn. They could get stuck in your brackets or wires. Popcorn alternatives include Pirate’s Booty and rice puffs.

  1. Brush and floss your teeth twice a day!

It is recommended to brush your teeth twice a day, even if you don’t have braces, but if you’re in braces and you’ve eaten something sweet, it is best to brush your teeth right after the sweet meal. Also, brushing your teeth right after a sweet meal can save you from cavities. Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste and don’t forget to floss.

At Dr. Yazji Orthodontics we see a lot of patients after Halloween with loose and broken brackets. Broken braces or broken appliances mean your teeth are not moving as planned by your orthodontist and that your treatment may take longer than Dr. Yazji originally designed. That’s why is very important to follow your orthodontist instructions.

If you have a broken appliance or loose bracket, call us so that we can schedule an appointment for you with adequate time for repair. We will work to fix the problem quickly, so you can continue your orthodontic treatment and avoid painful cuts from the loose brackets.

Should I Get Braces?

Do I Need Braces?

As far as I can remember, I’ve always had crooked teeth, and watching people flashing their perfect smile used to make me wonder if I’d be able to smile confidently one day. But, according to my mom, the ‘crookedness’ of my teeth is a part of my innocent personality, and that I shouldn’t do anything about it. My mom and I never considered getting braces for me when I was a child, and as I grew, I began to embrace my not-so-pretty smile.

Having Crooked Teeth as a Teenager

At 16 years old, I felt a sharp pain in my teeth, and I immediately booked an appointment with my dentist. It turned out that I had plaque and cavities in a lot of my teeth. Then my dentist said something that left me surprised. ‘Why haven’t you got your braces yet?’ I asked, ‘Do I need braces?’. He replied, ‘Most definitely, yes!’ I reassured him that I was perfectly happy with how my teeth looked and I didn’t need anything to fix them.

The Impact of Straight Teeth on Oral Health

My dentist told me braces could give me straight teeth and could correct my bite. Moreover, having straight teeth and your bite aligned contribute to proper oral hygiene. It’s hard to brush and floss when your teeth are crooked. When plaque builds up in your mouth, it causes cavities and infections. So, visiting your orthodontist to get braces or Invisalign® clear aligners is key.

He told me that there are many reasons to get braces. Orthodontic problems like the ones mentioned below can cause excess wear and tear of your teeth, gums, and jaw muscles. What is more, you can have speech and swallowing issues. Therefore, you should visit your orthodontist to get braces if you want to enjoy good oral health.

Most Common Malocclusions

Underbite—when the lower teeth overlap the upper ones while smiling.

Overbite (deep bite)—when the front teeth bite too far down over the lower teeth, sometimes covering the lower teeth completely.

Crossbite—when your top and bottom teeth do not come together or bite in the correct position.

Open Bite—when there is a space between upper and lower teeth.

Spacing—where there are gaps or irregularly spaced teeth along the dental arch.

Overcrowding—where there isn’t enough room in the mouth resulting in crowded, overlapping teeth.

In my case, I had overcrowded teeth. I went home and did my research. To my surprise, I was already suffering from headaches, plaque, and chewing problems that I didn’t know were due to my overcrowded teeth. My dentist suggested that my condition could get worse with age if I didn’t get braces to fix my overcrowded teeth.

Looking for the ‘Best Orthodontist Near Me’

Undoubtedly, I told my mom about my conversation with the dentist. After that, I typed on my phone ‘best orthodontist near me’ and Dr. Maria Yazji was my number one google search result. She’s a 5-star reviewed orthodontist in Weston, downtown Miami, and West Miami. Without wasting time, we made an appointment with Dr. Yazji to get my braces on as soon as possible, she’s the best orthodontist near me so, it was easy to go for braces checkups along my treatment.

Getting Braces

My orthodontist told me that to fix my overcrowded teeth I could choose to get metal braces also known as silver braces, ceramic braces (clear braces), 3M Incognito hidden braces (lingual braces) or Invisalign® aligners. I chose the most common type: regular metal braces.

I won’t lie; the first few days after getting my braces were horrible. Eventually, I got used to them, and I was fine. Seeing my teeth move little by little into the right position was very exciting.

After the first three times I got my braces adjusted, I experienced a little pain like a slight discomfort but nothing I couldn’t bear. I felt a constant pressure on my teeth, and I guess this pressure is the force that pushes teeth back into their place.

I had braces for two years and now my smile is perfect. Getting braces with Dr. Yazji was the best decision I could make. She was very patient and accommodating with my busy schedule.

So, if you are like me looking for the ‘best orthodontist near me’, wondering whether you need braces or not, come and visit Dr. Maria Yazji and get a free smile consultation with one of the best orthodontists in town.

  1. Let sticky foods RIP. If it is hard, sticky, chewy or crunchy, stay away!
  2. Choose “Spooktacularly” Soft Foods. Choose soft chocolate, peanut butter, or other melt-in-your mouth varieties.
  3. Say Boo to Hard Foods. Avoid hard shell candies, nuts, hard tortillas chips and popcorn.
  4. Dare to Take Extra Care. Decide to make good choices before Halloween and brush/floss your teeth after eating any sugary treats.
  5. Try not to suck or chew lollypops for a long time. This will help prevent the sugar and acid ‘sitting’ on your teeth.
  6. Remember to brush and floss.
  7. Wait till you get home to eat your candy. It’s better to have an adult personally check your sweets before you have them.
  8. If you don’t have the chance to brush, at least rinse your mouth with water after eating candies

It does not matter if you’re wearing traditional braces / metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces or WildSmile braces, treat your braces right and get some extra Smile Rewards this season! To check how many points you have in your card, you can click here.

We also want to share with you some safety tips for the month of October.

See and be seen

Please be safe out there and stay well lit. Apply reflective tape to your costume, carry a flashlight or a glow stick. Keep your way lit and ensure you’re seen by drivers on the road.

Pick your costume carefully

Will you be wearing a mask? Make sure you can see where you’re going. Masks and costumes shouldn’t block vision.

Be a good pedestrian

Always cross at street corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look both ways before crossing.

Have a safe and happy Halloween from all of us at Dr. Yazji Orthodontics!
