Oral Health and Overall Health: Why Orthodontics Matter

Your oral health is closely connected to your overall health. Research has shown that poor oral health can contribute to a number of systemic health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. One way to improve your oral health is through orthodontic treatment. In this blog post, we’ll discuss why orthodontics matter for your oral health and overall health.

Improving Your Bite Can Reduce Your Risk of Gum Disease

Gum disease is a common oral health problem that occurs when the gums become inflamed due to bacterial buildup. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and even contribute to systemic health problems like heart disease. One way to reduce your risk of gum disease is by improving your bite through orthodontic treatment. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, which can help reduce your risk of gum disease.

Orthodontic Treatment Can Improve Your Overall Oral Health

Orthodontic treatment can do more than just straighten your teeth. By improving the alignment of your teeth and jaws, orthodontic treatment can improve your bite and reduce your risk of oral problems like tooth decay, gum disease, and jaw pain. Properly aligned teeth are also less likely to experience wear and tear, which can help reduce your risk of tooth damage and even tooth loss.

Orthodontics Can Help Alleviate Jaw Pain

Jaw pain can be caused by a number of factors, including misaligned teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment can help alleviate jaw pain by improving the alignment of your teeth and jaws. By properly aligning your teeth and jaws, orthodontic treatment can reduce the stress on your jaw joints, which can help alleviate pain and discomfort.

Orthodontic Treatment Can Improve Your Confidence and Self-Esteem

Orthodontic treatment can improve your smile, which can improve your confidence and self-esteem. Studies have shown that people who have a healthy, attractive smile are more likely to feel confident and self-assured in social situations. This can have a positive impact on your overall mental health and well-being.

Studies have shown that a healthy, attractive smile can have a positive impact on dating and relationships. A survey conducted by the American Association of Orthodontists found that nearly half of adults who underwent orthodontic treatment felt that it had a positive impact on their love life. Similarly, a study published in the Journal of Orthodontics found that orthodontic treatment can improve self-esteem and social confidence in teens. By improving their smile, orthodontic treatment can help teens and adults feel more confident in dating and social situations.

Orthodontics Can Contribute to Your Overall Health

As we mentioned earlier, poor oral health can contribute to a number of systemic health problems. By improving your oral health through orthodontic treatment, you can reduce your risk of these problems and contribute to your overall health. Additionally, some studies have shown that people who have undergone orthodontic treatment may be more likely to practice good oral hygiene habits, which can further contribute to their overall health.

In conclusion, orthodontic treatment is an important part of maintaining good oral health and overall health. By improving the alignment of your teeth and jaws, orthodontic treatment can reduce your risk of oral health problems like gum disease and tooth decay, as well as systemic health problems like heart disease and stroke. If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, speak to an experienced orthodontist like Dr. Maria Yazji to learn more about your options and how they can improve your oral and overall health.

wisdom teeth

Should I Get My Wisdom Teeth Removed Before Braces?

If you are considering getting braces, you may have been told that you need to have your wisdom teeth removed before starting treatment. While this may seem like an unnecessary extra step, there are several reasons why it is often recommended.

Why Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. Many people do not have enough room in their mouths to accommodate these teeth, leading to crowding and misalignment. When you undergo orthodontic treatment, your teeth gradually shift into the correct position, and wisdom teeth can interfere with this process.

Wisdom teeth can also cause other oral health issues. They are more difficult to clean, leading to an increased risk of cavities and gum disease. In some cases, wisdom teeth can become impacted, meaning they are unable to emerge fully, which can cause pain, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth.

Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed Before or After Braces?

In some cases, dentists recommend removing your wisdom teeth before starting orthodontic treatment. This is because the presence of wisdom teeth can affect the movement of your teeth during treatment, leading to delays or complications. Your orthodontist will evaluate if this is your case.

Removing your wisdom teeth before braces also means that your orthodontist has a clear and unobstructed view of your teeth and can plan treatment more effectively. It can also prevent wisdom teeth from causing damage or complications during the course of your orthodontic treatment.

However, in some cases, it may be necessary to remove wisdom teeth after the completion of orthodontic treatment. This may be because the teeth have emerged more fully and are causing issues, or because they were not causing any problems initially.

Can my Orthodontist Remove my Wisdom Teeth?

While orthodontists specialize in straightening teeth, they do not receive training to perform surgical extractions like the removal of wisdom teeth. In most cases, a general dentist or an oral surgeon will be responsible for the extraction of wisdom teeth. Your orthodontist can provide a referral to a qualified dental professional to remove your wisdom teeth before or during your orthodontic treatment. It is important to have a discussion with your orthodontist and dental professional to determine the best course of action for your specific case.

What Should I Expect During Wisdom Teeth Removal?

The thought of removal of your wisdom teeth can be intimidating, but the procedure is generally safe and straightforward. Your dentist or oral surgeon will administer anesthesia to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. They will then remove the wisdom teeth through a small incision in the gums.

After the procedure, you may experience some swelling and discomfort, but this can be manageable with over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs. You will also need to follow a soft food diet and avoid vigorous activity for several days to allow your mouth to heal properly.

Conclusion

In conclusion, having your wisdom teeth removed before starting orthodontic treatment might be recommended to prevent complications and ensure the best possible outcome for your treatment. Your orthodontist will be able to assess your specific situation and advise you on the best course of action.

If you are considering getting braces and are unsure about whether you need to have your wisdom teeth removed, talk to your orthodontist first. They will be able to provide you with more information and help you make an informed decision. Remember, taking care of your oral health before and during orthodontic treatment is essential for achieving a healthy and beautiful smile.

Retainers

The Importance of Wearing Retainers After Braces or Invisalign® Treatment

Congratulations, you’ve just completed your orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign®! You’ve achieved the perfect smile you’ve always wanted. However, your journey to a healthy smile isn’t over yet. After your orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist will provide you with retainers. It’s important to understand the role of retainers and why they are essential for maintaining your newly aligned teeth.

Why are retainers important?

Retainer help to keep your teeth in their newly aligned position. After the removal of braces or Invisalign® aligners, teeth will naturally shift back to their original position. The purpose of a retainer is to prevent this from happening.

Types of retainers

There are two types of retainers: removable and fixed. Removable retainers are made of plastic and are designed to fit over your teeth and you can easily remove them for cleaning and eating. Fixed retainers, on the other hand, are attached to the back of your teeth with a wire. Patient cannot remove them and require special cleaning.

A removable retainer can be further classified into two types: Hawley retainer and clear plastic retainer. Hawley retainer is made of acrylic and wire and is often used after traditional braces treatment. Orthodontists often use clear plastic retainers made of clear plastic after Invisalign® treatment.

Vivera Retainers

Vivera Retainers are manufacture by Align Technology, the same company that produces Invisalign® clear aligners. These clear, custom-made retainers are produce using advanced 3D imaging technology, which ensures a precise fit and a comfortable wear. The material used to make Vivera Retainers is strong, durable, and resistant to wear and tear, which makes them a long-lasting investment

How often should I wear my retainer?

Your orthodontist will provide specific instructions on how often you should wear your retainer. Typically, you should wear retainer all day and night for the first few months after your orthodontic treatment. After that, your orthodontist may suggest wearing them only at night.

What happens if I don’t wear my retainer?

If you don’t wear your retainer as prescribed, your teeth may shift back to their original position. This means that all the time and effort you put into your orthodontic treatment will go to waste. It’s important to follow your orthodontist’s instructions and wear your retainer as prescribed.

How often should you replace your retainer?

A retainer is not meant to last forever. Over time, they can become worn or damaged, which can compromise their effectiveness. As a general rule of thumb, you should replace your retainer every one to two years, depending on the type of retainer and how often you wear it.

Your orthodontist will advise you on the best schedule for replacing your retainer, based on your individual needs and the type of retainer you have. Some types of retainers may require more frequent replacement than others, particularly if they experience excessive wear or damage.

It’s important to remember that wearing a retainer is a lifelong commitment if you want to maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment. Regularly replacing your retainer is an essential part of this commitment, ensuring that your teeth remain straight and healthy for years to come.

Conclusion

Retainers are an essential part of maintaining your newly aligned teeth. They help to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original position and ensure that you maintain a healthy smile. There are different types of retainers available, including removable and fixed retainers, and your orthodontist will provide specific instructions on how often you should wear your retainer. By wearing your retainer as prescribed, you can ensure that your perfect smile lasts a lifetime. Don’t hesitate to contact us today if you would like to learn more about orthodontic care or retainers.

10 Benefits of Having a Great Smile

When it comes to making a good impression, the first thing that comes to mind is a great smile. It’s hard to feel cranky when you are with someone who is looking at you with a genuine and happy smile. Researchers have long known that smiling has quite a few benefits worth considering.  Here are 10 benefits of smiling that will make you rethink how often you smile each day:

  1. Improved Mood

Smiling has been scientifically proven to contribute to a release of mood-enhancing chemicals, such as endorphins, in your brain which can increase feelings of contentedness and happiness.

  1. Pain and Stress Relief

All those feel-good chemicals in your brain can help to relieve pain and stress. Similar to the level of pain relief that medications can give, smiling affects the dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin neurotransmitters which can lower your heart rate, blood pressure and lessen pain.

  1. Stronger Immune System

The chemical reactions that make you feel relaxed and happy will also contribute to a healthier and stronger immune system!

  1. Longer and Healthier Life

Those who smile more tend to live longer. In fact, one study found that, on average, people live seven years longer compared to those who don’t smile. This is most likely caused by the many other health benefits that smiling helps such as lowering blood pressure, heart rate, stress and anxiety. Smiling may even strengthen the immune system and overall health.

  1. Makes You More Attractive

People smile as an affable gesture. Most of us attribute smiling to other likable characteristics such as friendliness, happiness, and approachability.  No matter where you are in the world or what type of personality or physical attributes you are attracted to, smiling is almost always rated as more attractive than not smiling.

  1. Better First Impressions

When you realize that people are judging you more positively when you are smiling, it becomes obvious that people who smile tend to leave a better first impression when they meet others! Somebody’s first impression of you is what will stick in their mind long after that initial first meeting. It only makes sense that those who smile more will be projected that certain confidence and warmth that is a desirable attribute to have at work and at play.

  1. Stronger Relationships

People usually respond positively to genuine and friendly people. By leaving a positive first impression and being perceived as more attractive and friendly, you will continue to attract people who want to be around you and your infectious smile.

  1. Get Paid More

Smiling can make you more productive and get you recognized, especially at work. It’s no surprise that employees that smile more frequently tend to get more promotions, raises, and better tips!

  1. Boost Your Self-Confidence

Smiling makes you feel good and makes others want to be around you. The way you view yourself and your smile will surely enhance your confidence!

How to Get a Healthier Smile in Miami

How to Get a Healthier Smile in Miami

How healthy is your smile? If your teeth are bothering you, you’re not alone. People of all ages in South Florida have dental problems at one time or another. Whether your smile issues are cosmetic – like stained, yellowed teeth, or functional – like a misaligned bite or crooked teeth, you can do something about it. Healthy teeth make a healthy smile. When your teeth are at their best, your smile will look great.

If you want to improve your dental health in Miami, there are a few things you can do. First, make sure that your teeth are clean and free of plaque buildup by following a good oral care routine. Maintain good dental hygiene by following the American Dental Association’s guidelines of:

  • Brushing two times a day for two minutes at a time
  • Using fluoride toothpaste and dental products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance
  • Flossing or cleaning between teeth once a day
  • Seeing your dentist regularly for checkups, cleanings, and treatment

Following these guidelines can help you prevent staining, keep cavities from forming, and stop gum disease from developing in your mouth.

Orthodontic Treatment in Miami

But keeping your teeth clean and gums healthy isn’t the only thing you can do for a healthy smile in Miami. If your teeth are misaligned, they can be causing you problems. Crooked or crowded teeth are not only less attractive than straight teeth, but they can also lead to tooth damage and even tooth loss. Overlapping teeth can be hard to keep entirely clean, and crowded teeth put pressure on surrounding teeth, which potentially damages them. Straightening your teeth with orthodontic treatment in Miami is one way to make sure your smile is healthy.

Oral Care Plus Customized Braces Equals A Healthy Smile

Oral Care Plus Customized Braces: Everyone wants a great smile. And if you asked most people, they’d tell you that straight, white teeth are what you need for a beautiful smile. If you asked dentists, though, they would add that the function and overall health of your teeth are also very important for a great smile. Some people are born with naturally straight teeth, and some people go their whole lives without a single dental cavity. Most of us, however, need a little help when it comes to getting our best smile. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to get a great straight smile and keep your teeth healthy.

First, let’s take a look at some of the steps you can take to get and maintain healthy, cavity-free teeth:

  • Brush your teeth two times a day. The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice daily, each day, to reduce the risk of dental cavities, receding gums, and gum infections. Brushing your teeth to reduce the risk of these oral health issues is important because untreated tooth decay and gum disease can lead to tooth loss. By keeping your teeth clean and healthy, you may be able to avoid the need for dentures, implants, and bridges and keep your real teeth instead.
  • Rinse when you can’t brush. You’re not always at home after meals, and you probably don’t always have a toothbrush and toothpaste with you. But you can still keep your teeth clean and prevent trapped food and bacteria buildup by rinsing your mouth with water. The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends that children rinse after lunch when at school, and then brush once they get home.
  • Change out your toothbrush regularly. Old, worn toothbrush bristles aren’t as effective as new ones. The AAO recommends replacing your toothbrush or your electric toothbrush’s head at the first sign of wear. Even if your toothbrush isn’t worn out, the AAO says you should replace your brush at least once every three months.

Healthy teeth and gums are the foundation for a lifetime of great smiles. But crooked, crowded teeth or gaps between teeth may be keeping you from the perfect smile you want. Straight teeth actually help you achieve better dental health by reducing the pressure that crowded teeth exert on surrounding teeth, and by correcting jaw and bite issues. At Dr. Maria Yazji Orthodontics, South Florida patients can fix common orthodontic problems and get their best smiles.
